Sick Visits Q &A

What kinds of issues can be treated through sick visits?

At SEARK Children’s Clinic, Dr. Atkins and his team can address a wide range of common childhood injuries and illnesses during sick visits. Some of the issues that bring kids and families in for acute care include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea and constipation
  • Sprains and strains
  • Minor lacerations
  • Broken bones
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Cold, flu, and COVID-19 symptoms

Dr. Atkins understands that kids are often more comfortable when they receive care from a pediatrician they already know and trust. He takes great pride in helping children feel better when they encounter an unexpected illness or injury.

How should I prepare for my child’s sick visit?

Taking some time to prepare for your visit can help you and your child make the most of your time in the office. This begins with taking note of when your child first began experiencing symptoms, and what efforts and circumstances seem to make symptoms better or worse.

It’s also helpful to prepare a written list of any medications your child is taking, including the dosing schedule. If your child has been treated for specific medical conditions, be sure to include that information.

During sick visits, Dr. Atkins strives to quickly assess your child and get to the bottom of the cause of symptoms. The office offers a range of lab testing options, including rapid testing for certain common pediatric health issues.

How do I know if a sick visit is the right fit for my child’s needs?

Deciding where to turn for help isn’t always easy when your child is feeling sick or in pain. SEARK Children’s Clinic is equipped with the tools and technology needed to diagnose a vast array of common childhood health issues.

Dr. Atkins has expertise in pediatric care and is available to help in your family’s time of need. However, there are some symptoms that are best addressed in an emergency room setting. If any of the following apply to your child’s condition, seek immediate emergency attention:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Visibly broken bones
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

If you’re uncertain where to turn for care, feel free to reach out to the office by phone to explain your circumstances and receive guidance. Online booking is also an option for sick visits, including same-day appointments.
