Allergy Injections Q & A

What are some common childhood allergies?

Allergies develop when a child’s immune system mistakenly identifies a substance as potentially harmful and launches a strong immune response. This means that any time that child encounters the substance in the future, symptoms will develop.

Kids (and adults) can develop allergies to a vast array of substances. These substances are referred to as “triggers” for those with allergies. Some of the more common allergy triggers include:

  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Peanuts
  • Soy
  • Bleach and other household chemicals
  • Tobacco and other forms of smoke
  • Eggs
  • Shellfish
  • Bee stings and insect bites
  • Certain medications

Some kids only develop an allergy to one specific substance, while others experience allergic reactions when exposed to numerous triggers.

What are some signs my child might need allergy injections?

Understanding the signs of an allergic reaction can help you know when to seek allergy testing and treatment. Some of the changes that develop due to allergies include:

  • Runny nose
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Swollen or watery eyes
  • Hives

If you’re concerned your child may have allergies, testing is a simple and safe process and can reveal in-depth information about which substance might be causing these reactions. Allergy injections are a wonderful treatment option.

How do allergy injections work?

Allergy injections work by exposing your child to minute volumes of a specific allergen. Over time, these carefully controlled exposures help your child develop a tolerance for the triggering substance. This process is known as immunotherapy, and offers the chance to manage allergies without medication.

Allergy injections are a good fit for insect stings, seasonal allergies, and many types of indoor allergies. They are not an effective treatment for food allergies or chronic hives. Dr. Atkins can offer guidance on how to address these types of allergies.

The injections are performed using incredibly thin needles, which don’t extend deep within your child’s tissues. Most kids don’t find allergy injections painful and are excited to see how the treatment makes it easier for them to learn, play, and spend time with family without worries about allergic reactions.
